Proud to be backward?

Ever had someone tell you, with a beaming face, that they are proud to be branded as belonging to a “backward” class?

I had a person tell me exactly that a couple of days ago.

Sad.

  1. Ashwin, why shud he not be proud that he belongs to ‘bckward’ class? as in, if someone is born ST/SC, nothing much he/she can do about it, right!
he rather be pround than crib about it!

  2. Once again… you got it wrong or may be I didn’t tell the full details

The context was something similar to “Hey, I am from a backward class. I am proud to be backward because we get so much facilities, so many discounts, reservations…” so on and so forth.

One may feel proud that he is an adivasi or a vanniyar or a thevar or even an iyer or iyengar and what not. If it is based on a cultural/ heritage perspective, I have no objections. But in this case… I didn’t feel it was a healthy attitude. And hence the “sad” part.

  3. Why is it sad? You should be proud of your lineage…

  4. *facepalm*

    I give up.

Are times so bad such that letting someone label your “lineage” as “backward” is seen as something to be proud of?

If it is based on their economic condition, may be its fine. But no one in their right state of mind would/ should like anyone calling them “backward”… especially using their lineage.

  5. 1. right, u never gave the full details.
    2. ur right here. You can proud of your religion but not of your caste!
    point taken!
